Each year the Halifax Regional Municipality, the Mayor and Regional Council recognize the extraordinary contributions of individuals and groups who volunteer their time and skills to provide services and programs in municipal communities.
Do you know a deserving group or individual? Why not nominate them today? Nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Volunteer Awards. Nominations will close December 16, 2016.

Each year the Halifax Regional Municipality, the Mayor and Regional Council recognize the extraordinary contributions of individuals and groups who volunteer their time and skills to provide services and programs in our communities.

Nominee Criteria

  • The Group Volunteer Award is open for any volunteer group (a club, society, or association that is organized and operated without the purpose of making profit) that has made a significant impact on building stronger communities through services, programs, projects and/or events and delivers these in the region.
  • This is a scored process, which means all areas of the nomination form must be completed and well explained.  Nominations that are incomplete, inaccurate, late or do not comply with the below criteria may be not be accepted.
  • Groups, who meet the following criteria, are eligible for a Volunteer Award:
    • Demonstrates initiative, leadership and creativity in service to others;
    • Has a plan for sustainability;
    • Shows successful partnerships or collaborations; and
    • Improves the overall quality of life of citizens and the community.
  • It is important to illustrate through the nomination form the impact the group has had.  To ensure your nomination meets the criteria, capture as much of the group’s history as possible.  This will make a stronger, more complete application.
  • The group’s volunteer efforts listed on this form must truly be voluntary; that is they are not part of their day to day employment functions.
  • Volunteer groups that are nominated are eligible for an award in only one of the three categories.  On the following form, please select the category that fits the group you are nominating. 
Category 1: Community group with annual finances and grants under $50,000
Category 2: Community group with annual finances and grants exceeding $50,000
Category 3: Community youth group (youth volunteers up to 25 years old)

Each year the Halifax Regional Municipality, the Mayor and Regional Council recognize the extraordinary contributions of individuals and groups who volunteer their time and skills to provide services and programs in our communities.

Nominee's Criteria
Adult or youth volunteers, who meet the following criteria, are eligible for a municipal Volunteer Award:

    • Demonstrates initiative, leadership and creativity in his/her service to others;
    • Serves as a role model for others in his/her community;
    • Inspires others to engage in volunteer service;
    • Improves the overall quality of life of fellow citizens and the community as a whole.
       
  • Describe the impact the nominee has had and include as much of the volunteer’s history as possible. 
  • Ensure the nominee’s volunteer efforts are voluntary and not paid. Paid work cannot be listed on the form. If you require any clarification please contact us at 902-490-1573.
  • Nominees must be a resident of Halifax Regional Municipality.
  • Youth nominees must be between the ages of 13-19.
  • Nominators may only nominate one person.
  • The nominee cannot have received this award in the last 5 years.  To find out if nominees have received the award in the past, please look online www.halifax.ca/volunteerservices/awards or call 902-490-1573.
  • This is a scored process.  All areas of the nomination form must be completed.   Nominations that are unclear, inaccurate, late or do not comply with the below criteria may not be accepted.

Award Selection Process

All nominations are scored and awards are allotted by each of the 16 electoral districts. 

  • All nominees and award recipients are presented to Executive Standing Committee of Council for final approval. 
  • All nominees will receive a letter in March thanking them for their community contribution.
  • Successful nominees will be invited to attend a ceremony and reception in April with the Mayor and members of Regional Council to receive their award.     
  • Nominators will receive a letter in March informing them of the status of their nominee.
  • Ten volunteers are selected to represent the municipality at the Provincial Volunteer Awards, receiving a second award.
